The 12 girls were sent home on Tuesday February 7 from the Moi Kadzodzo Girls Secondary School in the coastal town of Kilifi north of Kenya's port city of Mombasa.
The headmistress of the school, Dorcas Kavuku was shown on Kenyan TV news saying, "According to the school rules we do not expect a girl to kiss another girl."
She was further quoted by the Capital FM news website saying, "I got reports from the general student body that these particular girls were not behaving according to the school rules. They practised lavish touching and kissed each other which is not normal for people of the same gender,"
According to media reports, of the 12 girls sent home to fetch their parents, six "confessed" to lesbian behaviour to a government committee of education ministry officials, while the other six denied being involved in lesbianism.
The head mistress said she had asked the girls to fetch their parents in order to enable them receive joint counselling to prevent the students from becoming psychologically affected [by their lesbian behaviour].Sending students home over allegations of lesbianism or homosexuality appears to be a growing trend in Kenya. In August 2011 news reports indicated that at least 50 Kenyan schoolgirls had been questioned at another school for allegedly practicing "lesbianism and devil worship."
